Top 3 best insurance companies in Ontario (according to Google)
In order for these insurance companies to make this list, they had to meet a few criteria:
- Must be an insurance company (not a broker)
- Must offer both home and auto insurance (so that you can bundle & save)
- Must offer insurance in the province of Ontario
- Must have Ontario-specific reviews
You can read more about our ranking factors below.
Consider these rankings as a starting point when choosing the best insurance company in Ontario for you.
Pro tip: Once you’ve narrowed down the companies you want to work with, be sure to check that they offer the kind of coverage you need.
This is because not all home and auto insurance companies offer specialty coverages.
For example, specialty coverages in Ontario include:
- High risk insurance (home, auto & business)
- Classic car insurance
- Commercial insurance (because it’s highly personalized)
With that covered, we’re jumping into the top three best-rated home and car insurance companies in Ontario.
According to Desjardins insurance reviews, the top-rated, most-reviewed insurance agency in Ontario has a score of 4.7.
With a solid provincial average rating of 4.3, Desjardins has landed in the top spot on this list. 🏆
They’re a direct insurance company that offers both home and auto insurance throughout Ontario.
This is good news if you want to bundle your policies to save on your insurance rate.
They’re also the second largest insurer in Canada on top of being a major financial institution.
Wondering if Belairdirect is a good insurance company? The results are in. 👇
Belairdirect takes the silver, with a 4.2 average rating province-wide (across its different offices).
They’ve been around for over 70 years, and offer both home and auto insurance.
Belairdirect is owned by Intact Financial Corporation, but unlike Intact, it’s a direct insurance company.
That means you can give them a call directly to get your car and house insurance in place.
3. The Co-operators
The Co-operators is a direct insurance company with a Canada-wide presence.
They have hundreds of agents in Ontario – the most out of the insurance companies on this list.
Since this company has so many offices, the Co-operators insurance reviews really vary on a case-by-case basis.
That said, their provincial average Google rating is 4, which is pretty respectable.
Notable mentions – other top home & car insurance companies in Ontario
It wouldn’t be a competition without a few runners-up.
Here are 10+ additional best home and car insurance companies in Ontario to choose from.
They might not have met the top three rankings, but their customer satisfaction as home and auto insurers in Ontario isn’t too shabby.
Allstate is a direct home and auto insurance company that offers coverage Canada-wide.
They have a big presence in the province, with agencies in cities across Ontario.
Reviews vary quite a bit from office to office, so make sure to check the rankings on individual locations.
Their provincial average rating is 3.6 on Google reviews.
5. Intact Insurance
Intact is Canada’s biggest insurance company.
They offer home and auto insurance exclusively through the insurance brokers they work with.
On that note, KBD works with Intact to provide car insurance to our Ontario clients.
Intact Insurance reviews bring the company’s provincial average Google ratings to 3.3.

RBC also offers a range of insurance products, including home and auto.
Fun fact: Aviva insurance actually underwrites all of RBC Insurance.
RBC’s insurance services have a provincial average Google review rating of 3.2.
You can go to their website for an RBC home and auto insurance quote.
7. The Personal
The Personal is a subsidiary company of Desjardins.
It’s a direct insurance company that offers group insurance.
They offer home and car insurance through these packages, and have several offices in Ontario.
Their provincial average rating is 3.2.
8. TD Insurance
Like RBC, TD is another one of Canada’s “big-five” banks.
As an insurance company, they offer a range of insurance products directly to their clients.
This includes home and car insurance.
9. Gore Mutual
According to their website, Gore Mutual has been around since the 1800s.
They offer home and car insurance through a broker model.
With only one office, their average provincial rating is 2.8.
Aviva is another heritage insurance company.
It’s been around since the 1800s, and offers house and car insurance through a broker model.
Their provincial average rating is 2.5.
Beneva is a new direct insurance company that offers its products Canada-wide.
It’s the result of a merger between SSQ and La Capitale in 2020.
As far as Google reviews, it doesn’t have many yet.
We’ll wait and see how they move up (or down) the list once they’re more established in Ontario.
Economical insurance has a 2.4 average provincial rating according to Google reviews.
They work through a broker model – and KBD is on their roster.
13. CAA Insurance Ontario
CAA is well known for coming to the rescue when your car breaks down on the highway.
On top of their regular services, they’ve newly ventured into providing home and car insurance in Ontario.
Current CAA insurance reviews show a rating of 2.0 on Google, but we expect their rating to go up as they get more established.
Wawanesa rounds up the list with an average Google rating of 2 across its Ontario offices.
They’re a broker insurance company that provides home and auto insurance in Ontario.
Online home & auto insurance providers in Ontario
Sonnet and Square One didn’t meet the ranking criteria we outlined above – but, they’re still worth mentioning on this list of best insurance companies in Ontario.
They each have high ratings, and can be good options, particularly if you’re looking for an online insurance service.
15. Square One Insurance
Square One is a direct home insurance company, with one office in downtown Toronto.
This insurance company is headquartered in British Columbia, and their provincial average rating is also 4.7.
In addition to home, they offer tenant and condo insurance.
The caveat is that they don’t offer auto insurance in Ontario – so if you’re looking for the best car insurance companies, Sonnet (or one of the previous options) could work for you.
16. Sonnet Insurance
Sonnet Insurance reviews have an average 4.1 rating out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.
They stand out in this list as an insurance company that operates 100% online.
If you like the convenience of doing everything online, these guys could be for you.
However, because of this, we had to measure their rating based on Trustpilot – not Google.
They’re owned by Economical, which KBD works with.
KBD’s ranking table for Ontario insurance companies
In Ontario, you can get insurance one of two ways: through a broker, or through a direct insurance company.
That’s because you can contact some insurance companies directly to purchase your policy, while others only offer their products through brokers.
Here are some of the pros and cons of working with each.
#1. Direct insurance company:
- If you already know which company you want to work with, you can get in touch with them directly
- Direct insurance agents only sell products from one company – which means that they know their products inside and out
#2. Insurance broker model:
- Access to insurance companies that work exclusively with brokers (Intact, for example)
- The option to shop around with multiple companies to get the best price
- It saves time (your insurance broker shops for you)
- Personalized service; you speak with the same person each time
- Brokers help process your insurance claims, and can negotiate for you if there’s an issue
So, with that covered, here’s KBD’s ranking table of the top three insurance companies in Ontario, plus the runners-up.
We’ve included whether they’re a direct or broker insurance company, so that you can choose the type of company that works best for you.
Pro tip: If an insurance company that works with brokers has poor reviews, but has the product you‘re looking for, find a broker (that has good ratings) that works with them.
Just a savvy little insurance tip for ya.
Best business insurance companies in Ontario
KBD is an Ontario home, car and business insurance broker.
Naturally, this blog wouldn’t be complete without including the best commercial insurance companies in Ontario.
Before we get into it, keep in mind that business insurance is super specialized.
Finding the “best” business insurance will depend on which company can cover you based on a number of factors.
This includes things like:
- Annual revenue
- Business type
- Business size
- Number of employees
That means that each business will need different insurance protections.
You can check out this video, where we get into different insurance coverages in more detail.
Make sense? Good. 🤓

How we compiled this list – top Ontario insurance companies rankings
If you’re getting on board with a new insurance company, you generally want to know that it’s reputable, has a good claims history, and fair pricing.
But it’s a tough category to rank because there is no single best or cheapest insurance company in Ontario.
- Every customer has a different risk profile
- No two insurance companies view the same client the same way – and some prefer certain profiles over others
- Insurance prices are always fluctuating, so ranking a company the “the best” based on its current prices is inaccurate
And when it comes to finding the cheapest insurance in Ontario, here are our thoughts:
So, how do you decide which Ontario insurance company to go with?
Well, as with all things insurance-related, it’s more about finding the best and cheapest insurance for you – since everyone has different needs when it comes to insurance coverage.
In this post, we ranked the top 3 insurance companies in Ontario based on how happy their customers have been with claims payouts, customer service, and pricing.
So, how did we check this?
With trusty Google reviews, that’s how. 😉
And we think this is the most accurate way of organizing the rankings, because:
- People don’t hold back with their reviews, and you can get first-hand accounts of what it’s actually like to work with a particular insurance company
- You can see which companies fit what you’re looking for, and shop around accordingly
We’ve averaged out the Google ratings of each of the insurance offices Ontario-wide to get an idea of how happy customers are with each company.
And since customer satisfaction can also change from location to location, we also took a look at the ratings of the branches with the most reviews and opinions.
How KBD stacks up against the competition
Technically KBD is an insurance broker, not an insurance company.
But in the spirit of competition, we’re including our own stats.
Who knows, maybe next time we’ll write a post ranking Ontario’s best insurance brokers. 😉
BUT for the record, KBD has a 4.8 rating, with over 600 reviews on Google.
We plan on keeping up the trend in Ontario, where we provide home, auto and business insurance.
Note: Some insurance companies might have low ratings on Google, but if you work with them through a broker, you could get a much better experience (depending on the broker of course).
Now that we’re done patting ourselves on the back, you can give the Ontario home and auto insurance brokers at KBD a call today.
So, you‘ve seen the ratings. Let’s do a quick recap on what you should remember.
